All the crap that comes with the job outside the classroom goes away the second one steps into the classroom.
Not to romanticize it too much, I will say that there’s certainly crap that comes along inside the classroom as well. It’s not rewarding, for example, to have to remind adults time and time again that they need to put their cell phone away during the lesson. It can be exhausting to be responsible for providing the energy needed to push through another lesson when everyone is already tired from a full day at work. And lord help me when I need the technology to work and it doesn’t.
But then a student tells you as she’s packing up her books that she loves your classes and wishes her other professors had the same passion.
Well, then you just melt a little bit and forget that any of the rest ever happened.
